Several years ago we moved to the United Kingdom from the mid-west in the United States finally settling in the north of England. When we arrived, we did not know any Americans and it was only a few years later did we start to meet Americans. The below advice is broad sweeping general advice for anyone planning to move to the United Kingdom. It can be read as a whole or by sections.
Ask Yourself, Why?
It is not possible to show up in the United Kingdom and start legally living here. Living in the United Kingdom takes planning and preparation. Your starting point is asking why do I want to move?
Wanting to live where Shakespeare or Churchill came from and experience another culture that goes back 1,000 years is not good enough. You will be moving away from family, friends, and making a life for yourself in another country. In the UK you will need to find a job, housing, and if you have children a good school. If you have very conservative political leaning, British culture may be overwhelming. Regardless, it is a massively big change and it is a major life stressor. Moving to the United Kingdom is something that will disrupt your life and possibly create division in your family. If you cannot understand your reason then no one else will.
One common reason, I find people move to the United Kingdom they marry someone from here. Their story follows a very typical pattern. Romance blooms and they marry. What is more romantic and beautiful?
I have met a few Americans who meet someone online. They exchange pleasantries, and typically the American will fly over for a visit. They will then fly a few more times to the United Kingdom to meet the person they met online. After a few, jet setting visits they become engaged and apply for a spousal visa. The visa gets approved and soon they are in the United Kingdom. It sounds quite like a fairytale romance set in modern times. What can be purer than meeting the person of your dreams and having technology unite you?
From my experience, those who meet the spouse online and once the excitement of settling in the United Kingdom wears off, many tend to become depressed and angry. I am not saying this is true for all online romances and I am not necessarily saying this true for most online romance. However, from those that I have spoken with a reason for this I believe relates to them becoming isolated from family in the United States because they do not have the money to fly back for periodic visits.
Flying to the United States
Flying to the United States is not cheap. A ticket from a major airport in the United Kingdom to the United States varies greatly. The cheapest for me was £350 per/person during the banking collapse. Average, for me, run around £425 – £525 per person. Highest I have seen is around the holidays and it can run between £650 – £1,200 per person for economy purchased 8 – 12 weeks in advance. Unless you are making at least £25,000 – £30,000 outside of London and outside of the Home Counties you may find expenses keep you from flying back on a regular basis.
Borax is used to make slime, in particular a type called jiggly. Jiggly is very similar to gelatin and very similar to putty toys of yesteryear. It creates a soft spongy semi-solid texture. Using borax base makes the slime durable and easy to clean up. Thereby making it is easy to take it with you and not have to worry about a mess.
Nonetheless, one of the issues I face as a seller of slime is the issue of borax. Some buyers are reluctant to buy borax base slime because they believe it is bad for them. There is some good reasons for this, such as:
It can be a skin irritant
If ingested in large quantities it can be toxic
Nonetheless, if borax is not consumed, if it is handled correctly, and proper precautions are taken then borax is relatively safe. When borax is mixed as a part of a slime recipe it becomes iniquitous, inert. The only issue that remains is not ingesting the slime and washing your hands when done.
Finally, I believe there is another reason why buyers are reluctant to buy borax based slime. Borax is easily confused with boric acid or sodium or soidum borate. The confusion lies, I believe, in fact borax is used to make boric acid. However, both are chemically different. Some may be asking if borax is used to make boric acid then how can borax be safe? Without going into an essay on chemistry think about NaCl (sodium chloride or table salt). Two chemicals are used to make salt. Sodium a reactive metal reacts with very dangerous chlorine gas to produce a safe stable salt for human consumption.
With that said, boric acid is used in insecticides. Exposure to boric acid can lead to poisoning. This means, it is easy to confuse borax with more dangerous chemical. Moreover, for the most part, if you do not eat a borax base slime and wash your hands afterwards then borax slime is relatively safe to use. Therefore, unless you are allergic to borax, I do not believe there is much risk with a borax based slime provided it is not used for consumption and it is used correctly.

Slime belongs to a group of stress aids called fidget widgets. Fidget widgets are any item that is used while thinking about something else. Such an item gives the mind a break by distracting it. For some people, a momentary distraction, can help focus attention and can help with relieving stress.
From my own experience with slime, the pulling and the mixing it is therapeutic for me. It momentarily disctacts me and freeing my mind of my daily concerns. After a few minutes playing with slime, I find my worries begin to melt away. So what about slime is relaxing? Personally, I find the physical interaction with slime relaxes me and helps me enjoy my time.
I realise my story of using slime may not mean a lot. However, when looking through media stories about slime being stress relieving there are several stories where people have found slime helping them relieve stress. So, I challenge you to try it and discover for yourself.

What is Slime & How Can It Help You?
When you strip away all colours, scents, and variations of slime. At its core, slime is a polymer. Without going into a discussion about polymer chemistry, a polymer is a large molecule that is made up of repeating sub-units. It is almost impossible to live our daily life without using a polymer. The best example of a polymer, besides slime, is plastic. Plastic is versatile polymer being used to make cookware, to make artificial limbs, and used to make airplanes lighter to burn less fuel. So, what does this mean for slime?
Being a polymer means slime has properties that allows it to stretch, to be kneaded, or anything else you can imagine. As you work slime, it can return to its natural shape. However, like any other material it ages but by using slime reviver it can help to extend the life of your slime. This brings me to the question you are wanting to ask, how can slime help me relieve stress?
Slime does not relieve stress by requiring you to wear it or have it monitor your heart rate. Instead stress relief from slime is obtained by interacting with slime. By interacting with slime, distracts your mind. How does it distract your mind? Slime from my experience is a very tactile and kinesthetic experience. Meaning the texture of slime and the feeling of slime is as much as the sensory experience as a physical activity. After a few minutes interacting with slime you may begin to feel less stress and begin to feel relaxed.
This can mean, situation where you feel stress (e.g. flying, working, family demands) can be made less stressful when using slime for a few minutes. Likewise, it can also mean you may feel even more relaxed when you interact with slime when doing an enjoyable activity like listening to music or watching television.
Types of Slime
There a literally thousands of combinations of slime colours, scents, and types. However, when you strip it all down there are three basic slime types:
Jiggly: Is typically a borax base type of slime. It is the most common type of slime we sell at Brighter Tomorrow (all photos on this article are jiggly). This type of slime has a texture like gelatin or putty toys of yesteryear. It has a semi-solid feel to it. This means this type of slime is ideal for travel since it leaves very little mess and the soft-texture makes it an ideal stress reliever.
Fluffy: Fluffy is made different ways, which may or may not include borax. Fluffy has a very sticky texture to it but it is very stretchable. Unlike its jiggly and runny cousins, Fluffy is more solid with still a soft feel to it. However, this type of slime can leave a lot of mess behind because of its sticky texture.
Runny: Texture wise it is like jiggly slime but the main difference, runny tends to be a bit more liquid. It is very like goo and it can be very messy, especially to clean-up. An advantage of runny, if someone has limited joint mobility in their fingers (e.g. arthritis) then runny may be easier to use.
What Type of Slime Is Best For Stress Relief?
Answer to the question depends on your personal preferences and need. Runny may be ideally suited for someone with limit joint mobility in the fingers. Whereas jiggly may be suited for someone that wants a slime that is easy to transport and does not require a lot of clean-up. Finally fluff slime may be suited for someone who wants a bit of quiet time. Whenever you need to relax, there is a slime type waiting for you.

One of the questions I am regularly asked by my British work colleagues is what can they do in the United States that is different. Meaning that it is not the typical theme park holiday offered by many of the holidaymakers. My typical reply is to ask what do they want to see or learn? I explain to them the east coast, excluding Maine and excluding Florida, is rich in American history from colonial days through to the Civil War. However if early American history is not there preference then I provide a few more suggestions.
1) Take The Train Across America:
Time required:Depending on where you start and end your journey plan for 3 – 4 days one way.
Cost:Varies by time of year and accommodations booked. If you do not book private accommodations on the train cost can be relatively inexpensive.
Airports:Chicago O’Hare (recommended)
Tips:There is something nostalgic about seeing America via train. It gives you a chance to see America like many do not. You will see large metropolitan cities, rural America, mountains, and dessert too. If done at the right time of the year, you will also experience a cross-section of very different weather. For example, you might experience a thunderstorm while traveling through the plains and a snow storm as you go through the mountains. This type of trip gives you an insight that many do not get.
With the changes to transport and air-travel being popular are no trains that travel east to west coast. Most passenger trains travel through Chicago and most likely If you are doing coast to coast then you will have to change trains here.
My advice, if you are looking to travel cross country via train the ideal starting location is Chicago. This will save you money and cut a day off your journey.
2) Traveling America By Car
Time Required:Depends on route but plan on 5 days
Cost:Varies. Cost will depend on car, route, time of year, attractions, and hotels.
Airports: Any major international airport on the east or west coast
Tips:America always has had extreme weather. If this is something you are considering, then it is best to consider September – early December or March – May for this type of trip.
Also, get yourself updated on American traffic rules as they vary by states. Some rural states like South Dakota will allow 80 mph on the interstate whereas highways in metropolitan areas may only allow 55 mph. This means speed limits will greatly impact your journey time.
Finally, research and plan your journey to get the most from it. For example, states will have fairs during the summer. Admission tends to be quite low and can provide a cheap family day out. However dates and prices varies.
3) Visit the Northeast In The Fall
Time Required:2 – 3 days.
Cost:Depends on travel plans. This can be done very inexpensively by renting a car and traveling through Vermont and New Hampshire. Plus, there are tours that will take you through the area.
Location:Vermont, New Hampshire
When:Varies, though September through early November tends to be the best times.
Airports:New York & Boston
Tips:Fall foliage depends on rain and temperatures. If the year has been a wet year, the colours will last and will be intense. It is a sight to see.
Because the northeast is very rural and it is not possible to fly direct. You will have to fly into either New York or Boston then plan your journey from there.
Time Required:1 – 3 days
Cost: Varies with location and event. However, this can quickly become a very expensive holiday because of flights, accommodations, and car rentals during peak demand.
Locations: Western South Dakota, Wyoming, Colorado, Utah, Idaho, and Montana
When:Depends on first snow that stays and varies by altitude. Most likely November – February
Airports: Sioux Falls, Denver, Salt Lake City, Billings
Tips:America is a winter playground that offers many options from cross-country skiing, downhill skiing, and snowmobiling. However, access to many of these areas will require driving during winter and driving in very rural areas. This will you will need to be comfortable driving in winter weather that can change very quickly and comfortable driving in very icy conditions.
5) Explore a Large City
Time Required: 1 week
Cost:Varies with hotel, activities, and time of year
Locations:Chicago, New York, Boston, Washington D.C., Los Angeles, San Francisco
When:Ideally May – September.
Tips:If you research the city and its offerings during your visit you will find large cities offer something for everyone and it is difficult to experience it all. During the summer is the best time to explore because there are many activities occurring and it will give you the most choice. However, traveling during off-peak times prices tend to be lower.

Endless Possibilities: The start Maxine Berry’s Journey
We are living in a truly exciting time, in the United Kingdom. Brexit and the upcoming general election provide endless possibilities. The most exciting possibility began about 8 months before the vote to leave the European Union, in November 2016. It is the Animal Abuse Register, Justice for Chunky, petition started by Maxine Berry.
Tennessee Based Register Modified for United Kingdom Standards
Her vision is having a register, similar to the state of Tennessee, whereby family pets are protected and those who abuse animals face longer sentences. The amazing thing about Maxine’s vision, the register not only protects pets but people too. At this point, you may be gobsmacked believing the register will only protect pets? Reality, there is a link between those who abuse animals and the increased likelihood they will harm people. No link is 100% and there are other factors that influence the decision, like longer sentences.
Now, imagine the UK having Maxine’s vision what type of country will we have? This author believes it is a safer country. Whereby animal cruelty, especially against family pets decrease, domestic violence decrease, and where appropriate support is given to help those overcome their violent ways. In essence creating a brighter tomorrow for many people living in the United Kingdom.
Is Anti-Americanism a Roadblock?
Next, if the register will protect people. Then how come the United Kingdom does not have the register? No path to change is simple and because animal cruelty is an emotive issue, there will be roadblocks along the way. When Maxine started her journey, she was realistic and knew it was not going to be easy. Her belief in making pets safe from harm and keeping people safe is her driving motivation. Currently, one roadblock Maxine is facing is the collective feeling inferior to America along with a bit of anti-Americanism. She will not let anti-Americanism or a feeling from other of feeling inferior to America.
UK Papers Can Publish Names and Photographs of Those Convicted of a Crime but the Animal Abuse Register Cannot?
So where does this roadblock originate from? The state of Tennessee since January 2016 implemented an animal abuse register for the whole state and 10 other states are currently legislating some form of animal abuse register. The argument that Maxine Berry is facing lies in the public exposure of those on the register. In the United Kingdom it is easy to search a local paper; find someone convicted of a crime with their photograph published and name published.
Publishing Names Leads to Vigilantism: Fact or Fiction?
Moving on, a part of the roadblock lies in the belief public exposure will lead to vigilantism. So what evidence exists Tennessee model will lead to vigilantism? This author has spent time searching for records indicating vigilantism after implementing the animal abuse register in Tennessee. At the time of writing this article, this author cannot find any reported cases of vigilantism in the state of Tennessee against those on the register.
This brings up the next question what about the UK? This author can find sporadic reports of vigilantism against sex offenders. Nonetheless shortly after the UK introduced the sex offenders; register vigilantism appeared to have decreased. This article seems to suggest the link between the media and fueling vigilantism.
Another issue this raises, there is a difference between those who commit animal cruelty and those who commit sex offences?
Why Design an Original Register When a Model Already Exists?
Many people fear Maxine is advocating a “naming and shaming” of those convicted of animal cruelty. In response to the misinformation, Maxine explicitly advocates it is not the public naming of individuals that makes the Tennessee model ‘an out-of-the-box solution.’ Instead Maxine continuously states it is the legislation. In particular, it is the longer sentences for those who abuse animals and the definition of animal that makes the Tennessee model that can be easily modified to fit the needs of the UK. If MPs review the cost and benefit analysis done by Maxine’s husband Brian they will see it is more cost effective to focus limiting the definition of animal to companion animals than the wide encompassing definition of animal as provided under the Animal Welfare Act 2006 and MPs will see over time the animal abuse register can be self-sustaining.
Tennessee Model Works
All things considered, how come United Kingdom has not implemented an animal abuse register based on the Tennessee model? What is the reason the animal abuse register, based on the Tennessee model, has not become law in the UK? Is it beliefs rooted in British inferiority to America, is it anti-Americanism, or a combination of? Such a question may seem harsh and maybe unfair. Nonetheless the question needs to be asked. It is important to remember, Maxine advocates it is the legislation not the public naming that makes the Tennessee model viable.
Furthermore evidence suggests the register might decrease vigilantism and the evidence suggests there is no link between the two, regardless of the model used. Moreover, the Tennessee model is a working model that has been around since January 2016 and has a history. Finally there is some evidence to suggest a UK animal abuse register (point of sale and employer checks) based on the Tennessee model is cheaper and may be self-sufficient without the need for strict enforcement or violating civil liberties.
Regardless of anti-Americanism and regardless of some feeling inferior to American exceptionalism in the field of animal rights, Maxine Berry will continue to fight for animal rights. She will continue for fight for the Tennessee model because it is the most cost-effective and the easiest to implement. Plus the Tennessee model provides an excellent model for legislation in defining animals and sentencing. It is time for us to unite to protect our pets and protect those who do not have a voice. By implementing an animal abuse register based on the Tennessee model we can make millions of lives better in a very short time.
